Picha na Dada
Photography Workshops
Since the day the Sisterhood Land meeting point opened and the projects started to function dynamically, we were struggling with our beliefs about uploading photos of the participating kids on Instagram and other Social platforms. In general, we are again the fact of exploiting the images of children, without their knowledge, understanding. We are trying to fight the double standards under which in Europe you can go to jail for taking a picture of a child, and in Africa it is very often a must-have holiday souvenir! Ethical photography is something that is extremely close to our hearts, but on the other hand, for the projects to work it has to be advertised and promoted in order to obtain funds and sponsors.
Hence the idea for @picha_na_dada on Instagram, (it means “a photo with sister” in Swahili), to set up a project profile where there will be photos of kids taken by themselves. It allows the children to feel empowered, to learn how to be creative and understand visual Arts. They have some glimpse of power and control over how they are portrayed. We already had some kind souls to conduct photography workshops (@trzeba_robic_rzeczy and @krupajw) and don’t forget we are constantly looking for people to share their photograph knowledge with our kids!
