Weekend courses

Tanzanian educational system is divided into 4 steps:
– primary school (7 grades)
– secondary school ordinary level (4 years)
– secondary school advances level (2 years)
– higher education (colleges and universities)

The turning point in everyone’s education process is the passage from the primary to secondary level. The Tanzanian government in their fight for better school system concentrates right now on allowing everyone access to primary school.

As the secondary schools are still few the exam after Standard 7 is meant to be difficult and select only the most promising students. Let us explain to you the situation in numbers!

Especially girls struggle with many adversities to receive education, even basic. Many of them live up to an hour away from school, and after school they are encouraged to do their chores and help around the household rather than do their homework. And those tasks are not easy ones. Carrying water, wood, caring for younger siblings, cleaning, hand washing. The list never ends.

Unfortunately, school is not much nicer nor encouraging when it comes to learning. Classes count even up to 120 kids, no textbooks, no pedagogical training for a handful of teachers. However, the kids motivation and willingness to work hard to pass their elementary school leaving examination is enormous. This exam opens the door to secondary education, to a better life.

By selecting the most motivated students from the Meeting Point, we provide them with extra help and lessons to give them a better chance to pass the Standard 7 exam.

On the weekends and during the holidays (one month in June, one month in December, 2 weeks in March and 2 weeks in October) approximately 60 children from Mambo and Mtae primary school attend the tutoring courses at Uvi Foundation for Education meeting point class in Mambo. They can participate in an English course, Mathematics and Science Course.

We also tend to organize Art and Music activities, provide the kids with materials for extra practice at home (printouts with exercises), enable them access to books and studying materials, to the Internet. Recently thanks to some kind souls we were able to start a basic computer class with 10 computers donated to the project.
