SISTERS FACTORY
Women’s initiative for social entrepreneurship in the Usambaras.
We create locally made products to empower girls and promote our region’s diversity and natural foods.
The main goal is to create employment (ultimately, up to 50 people). The ability to provide for oneself and support the family delays marriage, health-treating teenage pregnancies and thus the removal of women from the economic sphere. Women’s employment brakes the spiral of traditional forms of large families without much prospect for improving the quality of life. In addition, production requiring a supply of fruits gives real earning opportunities to women trading on a very small scale. Possibilities of additional earnings for trainers, foreman, craftsmen.
The aim of the project is to start building a strong female society in Mambo. Young women who are better prepared for professional work are better citizens, better mothers, and more active members of the local community.
Direct beneficiaries: 30, and ultimately even 50 girls (aged 14-17) who completed their education at the primary stage, but didn’t continue into secondary level.
Indirect beneficiaries: Women trading fruit in the Mambo and Mtae area (in December – January, when the mango season lasts, it can be up to 100 people) builders, foremen employed in the construction of the manufactory (about 20) employed trainers (5-7 people).

Why Sisters Factory?

– it’s a relatively simple to learn skill that allows women without or with a very low level of general education to be financially independent having an income preventing child marriage, teenage pregnancies, life in abusive relationships,
– Usambara mountains are lucky to have easy access to multitude and a lot of variety of produce like fruits and vegetables compared to other regions in Tanzania. However, most of the harvest is waisted or only exported raw, with little added value.
– it gives a sense of purpose, social utility, introduces new point of interest, opens to new horizons.
