What are Tanzania’s best birding spots: part 2 – Mkomazi NP

Mkomazi NP is a semi-arid savanna ecosystem, which borders Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, offers a unique mix of habitats, including open grasslands, dry woodlands, acacia-dotted plains, and seasonal wetlands. These diverse environments support an impressive array of bird species, making Mkomazi a prime destination for birdwatching. With over 450 recorded bird species, the park provides excellent opportunities to observe both resident and migratory birds throughout the year.

Perfect environment for birds

One of the highlights of birding in Mkomazi is the variety of raptors that soar across the vast landscapes. Birders can spot impressive species such as martial eagles, tawny eagles, bateleurs, and African hawk-eagles scanning the ground for prey. The park is also home to the strikingly large and endangered secretary bird, known for its distinctive hunting technique of stomping on snakes and small mammals. Vultures, including white-backed vultures and lappet-faced vultures, can often be seen circling above, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem by scavenging carrion.

The dry, scrubby environment of Mkomazi is particularly well-suited for spotting ground-dwelling birds such as the Kori bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird, as well as the smaller yet equally fascinating white-bellied bustard. The park is also a great place to observe guineafowls, francolins, sandgrouse, and hornbills, which thrive in this arid environment. Colorful species such as the lilac-breasted roller, violet-backed starling, and African golden oriole add vibrant splashes of color to the landscape, delighting photographers and birdwatchers alike.

Birding safari

Mkomazi is also an important stopover for migratory birds, particularly between November and April, when species from Europe and Asia arrive in Tanzania. During this time, birders can spot Eurasian bee-eaters, barn swallows, and yellow wagtails as they make their seasonal journey south. The park’s seasonal water sources attract waterbirds such as Egyptian geese, African jacanas, and black-winged stilts, creating a fascinating contrast between the arid land and the life it supports.

For dedicated birdwatchers, a guided tour with an experienced ranger can significantly enhance the experience, helping to identify rare and elusive species that may otherwise go unnoticed. Mkomazi’s remote and uncrowded setting offers a peaceful and intimate birding experience, free from the mass tourism found in other parks. Additionally, Mkomazi is conveniently located just a three-hour drive from Mambo, Lushoto in the Usambara Mountains, making it an easy day trip or an exciting addition to an extended nature tour in the region. Whether you are a seasoned birder or a casual nature lover, Mkomazi National Park provides an unforgettable opportunity to witness Tanzania’s diverse avian life in a breathtaking and unspoiled landscape.
