Is the tap water safe to drink in Tanzania?

In Tanzania, the safety of tap water varies significantly between urban and rural areas, necessitating caution and informed choices regarding water consumption. In major urban centers like Dar es Salaam and Arusha, tap water is generally treated by local authorities. However, even in these cities, it is advisable not to drink tap water without additional purification methods such as boiling, filtering, or chemical disinfection.

While traveling in the countryside

Unfortunately, in many rural regions, the situation is more critical. Access to treated water is limited, and communities often rely on untreated sources like rivers, lakes, and wells, which are susceptible to contamination from industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and inadequate sanitation. This increases the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and giardiasis. In those areas only use bottled water! While the Tanzanian government and international organizations are making efforts to improve water infrastructure and quality, progress is ongoing, and many areas still face challenges in accessing safe drinking water. Therefore, adopting personal water treatment practices remains essential for safeguarding health during your stay in Tanzania.

And what about the Usambara mountains?

The Usambara Mountains in Tanzania are a rare exception when it comes to water safety in the country. Nestled in the lush landscapes of the Eastern Arc Mountain Range, the region’s water sources primarily come from rainforests or wells, providing pure and fresh water. This makes the water in the Usambara Mountains remarkably clean and tasty compared to other parts of Tanzania, where access to safe drinking water can be a challenge. Despite the purity of the water, if you have a delicate stomach, it’s still advisable to drink purified water to be on the safe side. Many eco-friendly hotels in the area, such as Uvi House & Restaurant in Lushoto, use clay filters to ensure that the water remains clean and safe for guests. Often referred to as the “Switzerland of Tanzania”, the Usambara Mountains are renowned for their beautiful, green mountain landscapes, the safety of their water, and the overall lack of waterborne diseases. This makes it an attractive and healthier destination for travelers looking for a pristine environment with minimal health risks.
